La Liga given green light for June 8 restart

La Liga could restart on June 8 after the Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez gave the permission through a public announcement on Saturday afternoon.

The coronavirus pandemic has restricted any competitive football action in Spain since early March but the teams are gearing up for a resumption, having been allowed to start regular training this week.

La Liga president Javier Tebas recently predicted that the season could recommence by June 12 and in a boost, the country’s prime minister has confirmed that the league action could resume prior to that.

“Spain has done what it should and now new horizons are opening for everyone. The time has come to bring back many day-to-day activities,” He told.

“From 8 June, La Liga will be back. Spanish football has a huge following but it will not be the only recreational activity that will return.”

Around five players have tested positive for the coronavirus in the first phase of tests conducted and they were isolated from their teammates before the group training sessions.

Alongside the top-flight, the second division is also expected to restart. No schedule has been put up for the remaining La Liga games but it is reported that season could return with a derby between Real Betis and Sevilla.

Meanwhile, the main source of attraction should be at the top of the table where league leaders Barcelona have a slender two-point advantage over fierce rivals Real Madrid.

With the El Clasico games played out, both teams can’t influence each other’s results and the title could be decided by which side remains the most consistent through the remaining 11 games of the season.
