La Liga clubs permitted to resume collective training from Monday

Clubs in the top-two divisions of Spain have been permitted to hold full training sessions from Monday after further relaxations were announced by the country’s government.

No competitive football has been played in Spain since March 12 after the suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic but a resumption date has recently been announced.

Earlier last week, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed that competitive action in La Liga and La Liga B can restart from June 8, and it is now official that the campaign will resume with Sevilla hosting Real Betis in the derby on Thursday, June 11.

Over the past 12 days, clubs were initially allowed to train their players in groups of 10 before the number was increased to 14, and it has now been officially announced that regular training will start from July 1.

All games are due to be played behind closed-doors with the ongoing health concerns because of the COVID-19 virus and there are suggestions that the games could be played almost everyday to conclude the season in the third week of July as planned.

League leaders Barcelona are set to resume their title defence with an away trip to Mallorca. Real Madrid, who are two points behind them, are scheduled to host Eibar at their Valdebebas training ground due to the renovation work at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The race for the other two Champions League spots could be exciting to watch. There are only two points separating third-placed Sevilla from Atletico Madrid, who are sixth on the table. Valencia are not far behind with a three-point deficit to Diego Simeone’s side.
