La Liga 4-way title race and fantasy football picks for this weekend

A five-game winning streak by Sevilla matched by Atletico Madrid’s drop in form over recent weeks has opened up a four-way title race in the 2020-21 Spanish La Liga.

Only three points separate the top four currently, though Barcelona have the opportunity to go top of the table by beating Granada at home on Thursday with their game in hand.

Ronald Koeman’s side have the form, no European distractions and the favourable fixture list to regain the trophy. The bookmakers tend to agree as the Catalan club are as short as 1/2 odds to finish top of the pile.

Barcelona are followed by Atleti at 10/3, then Real Madrid at 9/1 and Sevilla further back at 10/1.

Diego Simeone’s side still have to go to Camp Nou and will likely need to win if they’re to be successful.

Real Madrid are distracted by being the Champions League semi-finals and also have tricky fixtures versus Sevilla and Athletic Club still to come.

Each of the contenders have favourable fixtures this weekend which is good news for fantasy football fans who have any of their players in your team. Those who need some advice, here is a player from each team we expect to do well this weekend:

Marcos Llorente (Atletico Madrid)

No player in the Atletico Madrid squad has been involved in more goals this season than former Real Madrid man Marcos Llorente. The Spaniard has 11 goals and 10 assists to his name.

Elche host the current league leaders on Saturday afternoon in a game Diego Simeone’s side will surely take three points from to keep them in the title race.

Marcos Asensio (Real Madrid)

Real Madrid were in action in the Champions League on Tuesday night and have their second leg in England this coming Wednesday. Expect Zinedine Zidane to rotate his side when they host Osasuna on Saturday night.

This should allow exciting Marcos Asensio to get another start. The lethal left-footer has scored four goals and assisted a further four in his 19 La Liga starts this campaign and provided he starts at the weekend you can certainly expect him to test Sergio Herrera in the visitors’ goal.

Antoine Griezmann (Barcelona)

Antoine Griezmann scored both goals as Barcelona beat 10-man Villarreal last weekend. This weekend the La Liga title favourites go to a struggling Valencia, who are without a win in their last five matches and no clean sheets since February.

Lionel Messi would be the obvious choice and is probably already in your team, so Antoine Griezmann also represents good value for money.

Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla)

Sevilla face the toughest test of the top four when they host Athletic Club on Monday night. Julen Lopetegui’s side do have the form book behind them though and top scorer Youssef En-Nesyri.

The Moroccan striker has scored the winner in two of their past three games and the club will be hoping he has his shooting boots on again this match week.
